Pokémon Masters got off to a great start last month, thanks to it nailing certain pocket monsters factors: It looked great in action, the core gameplay was a blast and the gacha theme of collecting Sync Pairs made for an addictive grind. The only problem? That grind could only last so long and once you cleared the current story mode, fatigue quickly begins to set in.
Pokémon Masters is a damn good pocket monsters experience, blending casual and hardcore battling into one attractive product. And a financially successful one as well!
Pokémon Masters is the bridge between casual and hardcore Pokemon, a two-way link that is aimed at being deep, addictive and easy to grasp. Sweet pokeballs, does it do that brilliantly.
Nintendo has proven that the franchise is fluid enough to exist in multiple genres, while also placing their trust in a select few outside developers to do the brand proper justice. Pokémon Masters then, may just be the closest that the series has come towards translating the mainline games into a mobile experience.
It’s a big year for Pokémon, as 2019 marks the debut of the first proper generational shift game in the franchise on the Nintendo Switch. While Pokémon Let’s Go Eevee and Pikachu may hold the honour of being the first sort of traditional RPG on that system and featuring familiar mechanics, it was still more of a gateway game that provided a taste of what a dedicated Pokémon could be on that platform before Pokémon Sword and Shield arrives. The year ahead, is about to get even bigger.
