For a long time, we had close to zero Tennis games – which is a pity given how we had both Virtual Tennis and top spin serving up aces. Then in 2018 we suddenly had two big ones; Tennis World Tour – one of the worst sports games I’ve had the misfortune of playing - and AO Tennis, which also wasn’t very good. At least the developers of AO Tennis fixed the game up after its release, to the point where it was a serviceable Tennis simulator.

It may have been a buffet year of endless hit games, but 2018 was also a year where disappointment was regularly served up on a plate. We’re not talking bad games here, but rather those games that failed to live up their own hype or even the most tempered of fan expectations. Whether they were unpolished, woefully lacking in features or simply just a chore to play, here’s a look at 2018’s biggest disappointments.

Tennis World Tour was one of the most anticipated sports games this year. Fans of the sport have been waiting for what seems an eternity for a good Tennis game, and that’s the opposite of what they got. I had the misfortune of reviewing the game, and while there’s potential for a decent game in there somewhere, the game was released in a half-baked state.

The biggest pity is that it feels like with more work, there could be a decent game here. Probably rushed to release to capitalise on the current Roland Garros French Open and the impending start of Wimbledon, Tennis World Tour is an unpolished, unfinished game – and it’s insulting that Tennis fans are expected to pay full price for this

We’ve been starved of decent Tennis games for what seems like forever. Top Spin and Virtual Tennis – two of the preeminent Tennis video game series – seem to have hung up their digital rackets, both having released their last games in 2011. That changes this year.
