After a week that saw a deluge of comments directed at Infinity Ward over their PS4 exlcusivity deal for a specific multiplayer mode in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, the studio is asking for fans to be a little bit more civil in their criticism.
Earlier this week, the small team of developers for the breakout hit Mordhau, Triternion, came under fire for comments they’d made in an interview with PC Gamer. In that interview, they said there were plans to implement race and sex toggles, allowing those who wanted it to only come across the currently available, default white men models in the game, ignoring people’s own custom-character creations in the future.
So long as you have the cash to flash, the industry doesn’t care who you are, which is a fact that is sadly lost on a small subset of gamers who have developed a god complex around certain games and believe themselves to be the gatekeepers of their favourite franchise. Xbox wants to change that.
There’s a perception that in-game chat in gaming, especially on Xbox, is rife with trash talk, racist and sexist nonsense and 12-year olds who’ll detail their carnal experience with your mum. That perception largely exists because it’s goddamned true. Now, Microsoft wants to change that.
Toxicity is an unfortunate and expected part of any kind of competitive setting. Dealing with defeat (as an example of what could cause this) is often something many people can’t actually process properly, and there have been many circumstances where those people straight up quit the game or even blame others for the mistakes that they have made.
Rainbow Six Siege is a fantastic competitive multiplayer game, that’s only become better with time. I haven’t played it in ages, but when I was playing it, it delivered some of the most exhilarating and tense multiplayer matches I’ve had. Like other competitive multiplayer games, some of its most vociferous players can make it horrible to play, spurting out racist and sexist vitriol. Those players are now getting insta-banned.
