Friday ended with a bit of a shocker, as Microsoft announced that it would soon be jacking the price of Xbox Live Gold up considerably. Many pundits presumed that this was an effort to drive more people towards adopting an Xbox Game Pass subscription, but whatever the true reasoning behind the move, folks weren’t exactly impressed.

Xbox Live Gold and ultimate are getting massive price drops in South Africa

Back in 2016, Microsoft increased the local price of Xbox Live and its associated services, to align with the local exchange rate a little better. At the time, it was around R11 to the Dollar, but Xbox Live Gold – which cost $10 a month – was available for about R50 a month. The price was raised to R159, sparking outrage.
