Released back in December over in Japan, Judgement is still headed west in June once localisation work has wrapped up. Or it would have been, were it not Columbia’s most infamous export managing to derail the entire game.
SEGA has now sort of revealed when Yakuza Kiwami, a brilliant remake of the very first game, is headed to PC. The game was announced alongside modern prequel Yakuza 0 for the PC last year. While Yakuza 0 is already on steam, we’re still waiting for Kiwami. It doesn’t seem like we’ll be waiting very much longer. In a taser gif on the Steam store page, a single frame flashes the game’s release date: February 19.
Yakuza may not have been an overnight success story even when it did go all in on a massive marketing campaign and localisation in the west, but over the years to come the series found a dedicated audience outside of Japan. The tale of Kiryu Kazuma has come to an end though, paving the way for a new generation of Yakuza games to rise up.
Yakuza shouldn’t be as popular as it is today, when you compare it to the trends of the industry. It’s a series of games that requires you to spend more time watching its story unfold than actually steering it, it has little to zero DLC after each game ends and the core mechanics between the various sequels barely change, even when they’re given a fresh face-lift with the Kiwami upgrades. And yet, Yakuza does gangbusters in the West.
