If Detective Pikachu is a prime example, then it very much is possible to make a movie based on a video game property and not have it be an absolute train wreck when the mainstream audience watches it. I’m looking at you, Super Mario Bros. If Sonic the Hedgehog is also an indicator, then it’s more than possible to do exactly the same but with a nightmare fuel abomination in tow that has been sent back to the drawing board after the Internet has had a field day with it. I mean seriously, who even approved this?
Point is, is that Hollywood now realises what they need to do to make a good video game movie, even if Street Fighter did show them the way back in 1994 and was promptly ignored. FINE! KEEP YOUR LACKLUSTRE ADAPTATIONS! IN FACT, NOW MIGHT BE A GOOD TIME TO PRAY TO THEM! I think I’ve got a decent recipe sorted for a good video game movie now:
- Don’t be embarrassed by the source material
- Go wild with the world around the characters
- Lots or realistic CGI fur
- Like seriously, a shitload of that fur
- But no teeth
- All the Easter eggs
- Just enough star power, but don’t rely on it
- MORE FUR
- Plenty of heart
Take that recipe, and apply it to your favourite video game franchise. Who do you want to see get given the silver screen treatment next? Better yet, don’t just tell me, explain to me how you’d like to see Ristar Wars: The Farce Awakens develop on the big screen. Give me your dream team, the actor you’d want playing or voicing your childhood hero.
The director’s chair is yours, you’ve got the budget and a talented crew ready to make this film a reality. Lights, camera and…ACTION!

I’d absolutely kill for a Ori and The Blind Forest movie with the animation quality of Kingsglaive.

Abe (from Abe’s Oddysee) would be a pretty sweet character to see in a movie. Filmed in live-action with a mo-cap Abe – he’s got a great balance of heart and comedy that would make a big-screen adaptation a lot of fun to watch.

Easiest would be something that has a very loose story to it. Like Dead Cells. Can pretty much do anything with it.
But I’d love to see a God of War movie.

I had such high hopes for the Assassin’s Creed movie, especially with Fassbender involved, but I guess that won’t ever get done properly now that it was so mediocre. Wasn’t there a Splinter Cell movie planned at some point? That could make for a pretty tense stealth action film.

None, if they game was made and written well enough in the first place to convey its story and characters then it doesn’t need a film!!… Also why cant anyone in the film industry come up with their own bloody ideas anymore?, leave comics & games alone they are their own media they dont need you over bloated industry ro destroy our memories thanks.

Cynical side aside….wait what… I kinda like the new narrative in the Doom games. The story might be very very very very very er minimal, but the Doom slayer back story is actually gaming lore goodness of note. There is something ultra cool about it. The Doom slayer…gives me goose bumps.

“NO NO NO. Don’t cast fireball on OUR village. Dumb turtle!” – a voice rang from the heavens. But Nico didn’t hear anything. He had just watched his whole house, whole family, and whole world, go up in flames. Choosing to move to a rival village was easy for him.
Little did he know what awaited there…

Any of the old Sierra quest games would make solid character-driven TV shows –
Police Quest: A police procedural comedy-drama
Space Quest: A sci-fi comedy adventure
King’s Quest: Medieval adventure with magic
Quest for Glory: Fantasy adventure with POV from each of the character classes
