Fresh off her success behind the camera on Pitch Perfect 2, and in front in the role of Gail, Elizabeth Banks is reportedly in talks with Sony (via Collider) to direct yet another Charlie’s Angel reboot. Should the talks prove successful she’ll also produce the movie with her husband Max Handelman (Pitch Perfect 1 & 2 producer). There’s no script as yet and no mention of potential castings.
This’ll be the third reboot (this millennium) of the 1976 TV show of the trio of titular spies that starred Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson and Jaclyn Smith. Most of us, I’m sure, remember 2000’s Charlie’s Angels, and it’s 2003 sequel Charlie’s Angels:
Dawn of Justice Full Throttle, that starred Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu and Drew Barrymore.
There was also a very short-lived attempt to bring the franchise back to TV in 2011 with Minka Kelly, Allie Ilonzeh and Rachael Taylor taking over kicking ass, and looking good while doing so.
While Pitch Perfect 2 hasn’t been as well-received as the first movie, it’s currently sitting on a 67% rating on Rotten Tomatoes as opposed to the first’s 81%, the consensus points more to the script as being the issue rather than any criticism of Banks’ directing – which seems fairly well-received, notably so for a freshman effort. The movie’s also pulled in substantially more than its budget at the box office, which always makes studios (in this case Universal) happy with a director.
However there’s no much in her background, in front or behind the camera, to suggest that she’s that comfortable with action – which are a part of Charlie’s Angels. So I’m not convinced (yet) that she’s the best choice to direct the reboot. I’ll be happy to eat my words though, because I’ve been disappointed enough times by those who do have that experience – looking at you Ridley Scott.
What do you think? Happy to be getting another Charlie’s Angels movie heading your way?
