Back in February, we heard that Elizabeth Banks was joining the cast of the new Power Rangers reboot as the infamous villain, Rita Repulsa. Now, if you’ve seen her as the completely over the top Effie Trinket in The Hunger Games movies, then you’ll know that she’ll probably do quite well in the role.
Now People Magazine have just given us our first look at Banks in the iconic role, and boy is it something. Take a look for yourself:
Well, that’s quite far removed from the original. And by quite far removed, I mean nothing at all alike. Banks is quoted as saying “It’s definitely a modern and edgy re-imagining of the original Rita Repulsa” which might be a bit of an understatement. Total overhaul is more like it, she’s basically unrecognisable as the character!
But, I vote we give it a chance. Costumes are one thing, whether or not she can pull off the rest of Repulsa’s classic cackling witch personality is another. Banks was quoted in People as saying “I’ve never played a villain before”, and adding that she’s looking forward to “world domination – and being unpredictable as a character.” Fair enough, but I think they should have at least kept the crazy hat.
We’ll find out just how modern and edgy this Power Rangers reboot is on March 24, 2017.
