We’ve seen lots of arty, picturesque images for Gore Verbinski’s The Lone Ranger thus far, but I don’t think any of us are living under the illusion that this film will be anything other than Pirates of the Caribbean with trains and sand. And I am completely OK with that if it turns out to be as fun as this new trailer, which also finally gives us a lot more of the story behind why that guy from that Facebook movie is now wearing a mask and really big, really white hat.

Native American spirit warrior Tonto (Johnny Depp) recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid (Armie Hammer), a man of the law, a legend of justice — taking the audience on a runaway train of epic surprises and humorous friction as the two unlikely heroes must learn to work together and fight against greed and corruption.

Aw, damn it, James Badge Dale! You’re such a talented actor, why do you have to keep dying in movies?! Are you trying to become the new Sean Bean? Also, somebody please tell Helena Bonham Carter that Robert Rodriguez and Rose McGowan called, they want their gun-leg idea back.

Other than that little bit of creative copying, The Lone Ranger looks to be the very definition of a summer blockbuster, light on the brain, heavy on the crazy, funny action, which is sometimes exactly what the doctor ordered.

Along with the release of the trailer, director Gore Verbinski, stars Armie Hammer and Johnny Depp and producer Jerry Bruckheimer will also be holding a live Q&A to answer fans’ questions about the movie. You can check that out on Yahoo! Movies.

The Lone Ranger rides into town and then blows it up apparently on July 3, 2013.
