Harry Potter for adults”. That’s often how Lev Grossman’s bestselling fantasy trilogy is described, but it’s not until you check out this first trailer for The Magicians, which debuted at New York Comic Con this weekend past, that you realize just how apt that description is.

In SyFy’s upcoming TV adaptation of the first novel in Grossman’s series you have the male hero who never knew that the tricks he had been doing was real magic, there’s the magically hidden away school, we get creepy and otherworldly faculty, and of course there’s the swearing, magic boozing and levitating sex. Okay, so maybe those last three are new – well, unless you’ve been reading some weird Harry Potter fan-fiction – and they just appear to be the tip of the iceberg on this really cool looking show that I’m now suddenly very intrigued to see. And no, not it’s just because of the floaty coitus.

Check out the trailer below.

“The Magicians” stars Jason Ralph (“A Most Violent Year,” “Aquarius”) as Quentin Coldwater, a brilliant grad student who enrolls in Brakebills College for Magical Pedagogy, a secret upstate New York university specializing in magic. He and his 20-something friends soon discover that the magical fantasy world they read about as children is all too real – and poses grave danger to humanity.

The Magicians also stars Stella Maeve, Hale Appleman, Olivia Taylor Dudley, Arjun Gupta and Summer Bishil. Mike Cahill (I Origins) directs the pilot episode. The Magicians is scheduled to premiere on SyFy in January 2016.
