The argument can certainly be made that Shane Black has never made anything even close to a bad movie. Of course he’s actually only ever directed two movies – Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Iron Man 3 – but he’s been in the biz for decades as the screenwriter behind such action classics like Lethal Weapon, The Last Boy Scout and The Long Kiss Goodnight. Ever since the international success of Marvel’s third Iron Man movie though, Black has just been queuing up work for himself behind the camera, and the first of those projects is now ready to show off to the world.
The Nice Guys is a 70’s set action comedy starring Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe and based on the film’s raucous first red band trailer, it appears to be vintage work from the man who pretty much perfected the modern buddy action comedy and seems to be taking it to a whole other level here.
Check out the brilliantly entertaining trailer below, but note that it is a bit NSFW.
How awesome and amazing does that look?! Black recently spoke to People Magazine about The Nice Guys, which he describes as a “half whimsical private-eye movie”, and had this to say about its crazy appeal.
“I think we’ve really lucked out. Whether this thing is a comedy with action or a thriller with jokes, one thing that’s very clear is these two are extremely funny. People will enjoy seeing the two of them [Gosling and Crowe].”
“It is an R-rated film and it’s a caper. It’s a little fast, a little funny and a little rough in places, kind of coarse. These guys are working-class dudes, they’re not really sophisticated private detectives, so it’s a chance to do the kind of thriller I don’t see too much of anymore.”
“[The movie] retains the harshness of the world and gives a nod that we’re very much in noir territory. It’s a little bit pushed – the premise, the time period, everything is a little crazy.”
The Nice Guys is scheduled for release on May 20, 2016
