This first trailer for HITCHCOCK is fiendishly entertaining

Good evening. With the calendar rapidly approaching Awards season, the Oscar bait is being flung out thick and fast. Well a rather large bit of chum has just hit the water and I really didn’t think this metaphor through before I started writing it. Damn.

In any case, Fox Searchlight have released the trailer for biopic docudrama Hitchcock and it looks fantastic. So please just go click on that and forget my bad writing.

Based on the book “Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho” by Stephen Rebello, “Hitchcock” is a love story about one of the most influential filmmakers of the last century, Alfred Hitchcock and his wife and partner Alma Reville. The film takes place during the making of Hitchcock’s seminal movie “Psycho.”

While just about everybody shown in this trailer appears to have, with the help of just a bit of makeup and costume, transformed themselves into their real-life counterparts with dazzling effect, I’m calling it: Helen Mirren for Best Actress. Yes, I’m basing that prediction purely on a trailer, but if you’ve just seen the same trailer that I have (otherwise, what are you doing here?) then you could say that the odds are on my side.

The film also appears to have a lot more levity to it than I expected, but I am never one to shirk from jokes, especially when they mention Scarlett Johansson’s ample assets.

  1. The missus and I are huge Hitchcock fans. He was an interesting man and the techniques he used in making his films were revolutionary for its time.
    We’ll definitely watch this!

Also a huge Hitchcock fan. My second favourite film technique (yes, I have a list. I’m geeky like that!) is the dolly zoom that Hitchcock invented for Vertigo.

I can almost predict that once you watch Psycho, you’re going to wonder what all the fuss is about. It’s so tame by today’s standards, but it was downright shocking back then and introduced so many aspects that are so commonplace now, that you’d be hard pressed to spot the innovation.

My personal favourite Hitchcock movies are unfortunately very cliche, but that’s just because the’re that good: Rear Window, Vertigo and North by Northwest.
