There are very few movies I love as unequivocally as Raiders of the Lost Ark. I have not only watched the movie more times than I can count, but I’ve also devoured all the extra tidbits surrounding it with manic glee. One of the best of these extras was undoubtedly Jamie Benning’s unofficial documentary on the film, Raiding the Lost Ark, which I highly recommend everybody should see.
And now Mr Benning is back to tackle one of those very same “few movies I love as unequivocally as Raiders of the Lost Ark” in a new filmumentary about Steven Spielberg’s Jaws.
Spielberg’s classic 1975 suspense thriller is a film that I never tire of both seeing and reading/hearing about as there’s a wealth of interesting nuggets of info on how behind the scenes activities – not always intentional – gave us one of most memorable and influential pieces of cinema. Such as how the animatronic shark constantly breaking down forcing Spielberg to keep show just the fin cutting through the water (now such an iconic image) or how Roy Scheider completely ad libbed his most famous line
Benning’s film, Inside Jaws: A Filmumentary, covers all of this and a whole lot more.
“After completing Raiding the Lost Ark in 2012, I immediately embarked on a new project, tentatively called Jaws Bites Back. After 16 months of trawling, reading, spooling, skyping, chatting, interviewing, editing and refining, I am pleased to release Inside Jaws, A Filmumentary (2013). As with my other filmumentaries this is a completely unofficial and non profit making project made with a genuine affection for the film. Enjoy.”
Much like he did with with Raiding – and his Star Wars filmumentaries before that, which initially got him fame but then got yanked off Youtube by some stingy lawyerly types – Benning has made this new film, Inside Jaws, available online in it’s entirety completely for free, and now you can check it out all two and a half hours of it below. That is if the suits haven’t gotten possessive again.
