The DayZ standalone is finally available, but it’s in alpha – and even the game’s developers have warned people to stay away. That hasn’t stopped 172,500 people from ponying up the £20/$30 it’ll cost to access it on Steam’s early access.
Here’s what the game’s page on Steam says. It’s all in caps, so you know they’re being serious.
WARNING: THIS GAME IS EARLY ACCESS ALPHA. PLEASE DO NOT PURCHASE IT UNLESS YOU WANT TO ACTIVELY SUPPORT DEVELOPMENT OF THE GAME AND ARE PREPARED TO HANDLE WITH SERIOUS ISSUES AND POSSIBLE INTERRUPTIONS OF GAME FUNCTIONING.
Still, nearly 200 00 people have paid for the thing, with the developers recording 142,403 concurrent players in one go. That’s a remarkable achievement for something that right now, is largely broken. On top of that, bohemia Interactive reckons it’ll be at least another year until the game even hits beta.
Creator Dean Hall really doesn’t recommend you buy the alpha, unless you’re a die-hard fan and want to be a part of the impetus.
“It’s a true-blue alpha. Massive areas of the engine were entirely reworked, involving a large team of people over the last 12 months. Much of what these achievements will enable won’t be seen for many months – so I really plead for anyone who is on the fence to take a skeptical approach – watch streams, read reviews, watch some let’s play and form your opinion. You could always come back to the game in three, six months time and buy it then.
"Buying early will be a recipe for disappointment," he continued. "It’s a chance for those who want to be part of that whole process."
I’m certainly keen on DayZ…but I’m not sure I want to mission through a broken game. If you want it though, you can get it here.

I wouldn’t mind paying for the Alpha if they at least give credit to the people who supported them in creating the final product.

Exactly they are letting players know exactly what they are purchasing.

I will never purchase one of these Titles…EVER!. Friends of mine nagged and nagged me to buy War Z, and after 1 look at the game, I told them they wasted their cash. All these Zombie sandbox seems like quick money schemes. The animations are always terrible, and they never really hit the ‘finished’ product mark.

WarZ was an absolute failure – and your friends did waste their money on it. That doesn’t make DayZ a waste of money. Nothing wrong with you disliking it, but it’s far from a waste of money. In fact – I rate you’ll get a lot more out of this game in the long run than you do any other game.
I’ve been playing the mod for over a year and it’s still as fun as day 1. Bought the Standalone, put in 20+ hours so far and I don’t regret it one bit.

I was merely referring to War Z as an example, and the bad taste it left in my mouth. I have heard reviews and seen videos of Day Z, and while it definitely looks better. Still not really my thing. As I said, the animations in most of these games seems to be below industry standard (This is partially my fault as being in the industry, guess I’m an snob), and have more bugs and glitches then I care to try. Believe me, I hope this Standalone Day Z is great, and they fix the flaws found in most of these kinds of games. If so, then sure ill buy it. But not while its in the state its in, I’ve learnt in my industry of work. You don’t pay for an unfinished product if you don’t know the kind of quality the company puts out. I am glad to see that Day Z has die-hard fan boys though. Its definitely got that going for it. You have a great day Sir!

I share your skepticism, but warz was made by crooks. Dean hall seems to have a lot more integrity to him and genuinely care for his game. People kept nagging him due to the slow release so this is what we got. It also helped me that behemia interactive backed the game as now there’s alot more reason to finish it since it’s their name on the line aswell

I have recently actually seen friends playing the stand alone Day Z, and it does look quite promising. If they keep up the pace, could become very awesome.

What a great way to market the game and get some much needed revenue in. Whats the profit per sale ? $15 x 200 000 ?
Maxiviper117
December 18, 2013 at 18:29
Its actually $29.99 so X 172500 = $5 173 275
Which is R53 543 3396.25
I doubt it cost anywhere near that much to make, thats alot of money

Bought the game a few hours after release – been waiting in anticipation for this game for a year.
I don’t regret it one bit. I’ve already had a helluva 20hours and the game is amazing.
If you don’t like glitches/bugs that come with an Alpha just don’t buy it, it’s not for you then :).
Looking forward to every new day playing this game myself!

After playing almost non-stop since release (minus the 4 mins I was late buying it and the 2 hours downloading it) I can recommend it. Sure it has loads of bugs and it has not got all its features implemented (animals next week yay!) but damn that feels when you run into a player and he does not shoot you on sight. Also much better than mod ever was (minus vehicles … i want a car sooo bad).
TL;DR : Buy it!!!!
Now to pass out from sleep deprivation.
Good night.

To be fair glitches and bugs were always a part of the DayZ experience so it really isn’t that big a deal. You may not know how visable/audible to zombies you are, you may not like them seeing you from 17 miles away, you may not like them running through walls but at least you can bloody shoot them!
The thing I hated most of all in DayZ was the fact the zombies not only ran 10 times faster than any biped ever possibly could but they did it whilst perfoming friggin evasive action! You could only ever shoot the things if they haven’t seen you or if they’re standing right infront of you hitting you.

The entire concept is “fundamentally flawed” according to the lead developer , and that problem is not something that can be dismissed by mindlessly parroting “It’s just an alpha” , if the idea behind the game is broken then no amount of polish and development will fix it.

you are right and wrong, it is actually the engine theyre using that flawed and cannot support the type of game and amount of players they want and need to make it fun. unless they scrap it and start over on arma 3 engine or better its not going to work.
