Homeworld’s getting the HD remake treatment

1 min read

You might remember that Gearbox picked up the rights to the dormant Homeworld franchise from the smouldering embers of THQ. That could be a good or bad thing, depending on whether they treat it like Borderlands, or one of their other franchises. they’re off to a good, if expected start; they’ll be releasing HD versions of the first two games.

On top of that, they’ll also be releasing the original versions of the games for purism’s sake, making it the first time that the incredible expansive space strategy games will be available on digital platforms like Steam.

Unfortunately it seems that Homeworld Cataclysm won’t be getting the same treatment; it appears that the source code has been lost, and Gearbox would have to make the game from scratch. Randy Pitchford has said that a “small team” is busy with Homeworld, so that’s rather unlikely.

I’m not big on HD remakes, but I might be on board for some Homeworld, just because it’s been so, so long.

Editor. I'm old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time - they were capable of being masterpieces. I'm here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.
