While the Wii-U hasn’t yet launched locally (it arrives this Friday) it has already been out for a week in America and so we can take a quick look at its first weeks sales compared to previous consoles to give us some indication of how it is doing.
First Week Console Sales
- Nintendo Wii-U (2012) – 400 000
- Nintendo Wii (2006) – 400 000 – 96 Million lifetime sales
- Sony PS3 (2006) – 150 000 – 70 Million lifetime sales
- Xbox 360 (2005) – 400 000 – 70 Million lifetime sales
- Nintendo Gamecube (2001) – 500 000 – 21.7 Million lifetime sales
- Playstation 2 (2000) – 1 000 000 – 154 Million lifetime sales
- Xbox (2001) – ? – 24 Million lifetime sales
- Sega Dreamcast (1998) – 372 000 – 10.6 Million lifetime sales
So all this research has proven one thing and one thing only, the first weeks sales have absolutely no correlation to long term longevity… that was a waste of time.
But Nintendo at least can be mildly satisfied that they are currently selling out of stock in most regions which is always a good sign,
