How many copies of GTA V have been sold?

GTA V is a pretty good game. For all its faults, objective depictions of the seedy underbelly of a digital Los Angeles, base humour and crass pseudo-satire, it’s a heck of a lot of fun. And it’s selling like proverbial hotcakes. Take 2 has now confirmed that it’s sold in – shipped – 45 million copies of the thing.

Yes, that doesn’t quite mean that that many copies of the game are in players’ hands, but it’s a remarkable number regardless. When we last heard, the game had sold though – as in actually sold to consumers – 34 million copies. That was in October last year, before the HD remaster was released on the new consoles. With the newest shipped figures, and a bit of extrapolation, we can surmise that close to ten million copies of the game have been sold on the newer consoles. That’s…frighteningly impressive, and highlights just how much of a behemoth the Grand Theft Auto name has become.

The PC version is yet to become available – and I imagine that it’ll help sell a couple of million more copies.

And it’s hardly the only successful game from the stable. According to Take 2, NBA2k15 has sold over 5.5 million copies, while Civilization: Beyond Earth has sol-n a staggering 29 million copies since October last year – a number I scarcely believe. I’m nearly sure that should read 2 point 9 million.

“Take-Two’s positive momentum was demonstrated once again, as we delivered exceedingly strong third quarter revenues and profits, and finished the quarter with nearly $1 billion in cash and short term investments,” said T2 CEO Strauss Zelnick. “We successfully launched one of the most diverse holiday lineups in the Company’s history and we also generated substantial growth in digitally-delivered revenue.

“Looking ahead, we expect that our fourth quarter will provide a strong finish to fiscal 2015, anchored by the launches of Evolve and Grand Theft Auto 5 for PC, along with an array of other offerings.”

Are you one of the many who bought GTA V? Did you double dip? Will you be getting it on PC?
