Not so long ago, we told you that Mass Effect was “on hold” as the studio downsized. This got me pretty sad for a number of reasons: BioWare is a rad collection of studios and I’m always sad to hear about people losing their jobs (even if it is normal practice after a game is launched); Mass Effect Andromeda was actually a good game and probably didn’t deserve as much internet hate as it got; and what was the fate of Dragon Age? Well, at least that last worry can be put to rest.
A new Dragon Age game is in development. This honestly shouldn’t surprise anyone – Dragon Age Inquisition was widely applauded and it’s a franchise that many people love. What has been confirmed is that Alexis Kennedy, the co-founder of indie game studio Sunless Sea who now does freelance writing work for studios, has been working on the new Dragon Age instalment. Without giving too much away, he said that the stuff he’s been working on is “segregated” from the rest of the game.
What I can say is I have been given considerable autonomy to work on a storyline bit of lore which is well-segregated from other parts of the game. It’s nothing that grandiose, but it is distinct. It’s a bit of lore which has not been addressed much to date in Dragon Age.
Not much to go on, but still cool to know there are people somewhere in the world busy crafting the next Dragon Age game for me to lose myself in. Dragon Age Inquisition came out back in 2014, with Mass Effect Andromeda only releasing this year – if we imagine they continue to space out the games this way, we probably have at least a couple of years before we can get hyped about the new Dragon Age game. Oh well, that gives me time to finally get to play Mass Effect Andromeda.
