It’s Hammer Time – MC Hammer and Activision?

By Gavin Mannion

This could be nothing or it could be the return of the most famous pair of pants to ever grace the silver screen. MC Hammer has been twittering (yes he does that) and has mentioned that he was on his way to LA for a top secret meeting. And then the next day he twittered once again that Activision was …

Next Tony Hawk to be Hands Free

That’s right, according to Activision executives from a game summit that is currently going on, the new Tony Hawk title is going to not make the use of our hands. Everyone seems to be jumping on the peripheral bandwagon and to be honest I didn’t think it was necessary. I really grew to dislike the Tony Hawk series and found …

StarCraft 2 Trilogy Not About Milking the Franchise, Blizzard Claims

Gamers were outraged when they heard that StarCraft 2 would be coming in three different parts. Blizzard had claimed it wouldn’t let the merger between Activision and Blizzard parent company Vivendi impact the way it did business. But the move reeked of the type of thing that would fit right in with Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick’s recent comments …

Broken Pixels – Spiderman 3

Broken Pixels: Spider-Man 3 It would be cliche to say that Spider-Man 3 was the game that broke the camel’s back were it not for the fact that Crispin Boyer, Shane Bettenhausen, and Seanbaby are now paraplegic husks of their former selves after playing an entire season’s worth of anguish-inducing games. They are powering down the Telefunk and wringing out …

What would you do if you were killing time in prison for wire fraud? If you’re Johnathan Lee Riches, you apparently spend it filing rambling third-party motions to unrelated court cases. Last Updated: November 6, 2008

Activision looking to profit from User Content in GH: World Tour

By Nick De Bruyne

This has me kind of worried to be honest. Kotaku report that: "Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard, noted during today's quarterly earnings conference call that the publisher may begin charging for user-generated songs uploaded through Guitar Hero World Tour's GH Tunes service. Kotick has previously stated that GH Tunes has the "potential" to be one of the 'credible alternatives to iTunes.' " I want to jump the gun here and say that Activision are just seeing nothing but dollar signs but we have yet to see if any of the users will be able to benefit from their own creations. If they don't then I am not going to be a happy camper. Profiting directly from content created by users is something that goes a little overboard in my opinion and the fact that the songs won't even have lyrics makes me wonder if it will all be worth it. As reported by Kotaku, Activision knows exactly how much money can be made from subscription based services such as World of Warcraft but I don't see this as a step forward for gamers at all. The content should be free and available to anyone who buys the game. If something like this catches on you could see scenarios were all publishers start charging for the ability to access user created content.

Having gained a stable subscription revenue base from World of Warcraft, Activision Blizzard may look to monetize some of its other titles through subscriptions — like Guitar Hero, CEO Bobby Kotick said today. Last Updated: November 6, 2008
