While 2020 certainly didn’t need any more horrific moments to carry us through the year, sometimes it’s just nice being scared by something that’s not reality. That’s why we turned to a pantheon of horror games, to maybe remind us that things could always be worse.

On the cusp of a new console generation, 2019 was gaming at its very finest and worst when you think about it. Old legends returned to glorious new heights as single-player games surged forward in quality as gamers got fed up with peak live service game launches, indies remained as groundbreaking as ever and pure thrills based on proven formulas filled the spaces between big budget releases. Which means that obviously , its award season time.

Whether it’s an indie project such as Celeste or a large experience such as God of War, video games in the last decade alone have reached a new benchmark in delivering mature and emotional writing to you the player. It’s just a pity that the Writer’s Guild of America doesn’t see it that way.

Which is also, purely coincidentally, when the actual awards are taking place this year so clear your schedule for the annual Geoff Keighley and his Super Friends Show! Despite the horrendous glitz and glamour, unnecessarily high-end production values and needless showboating from publishers and developers, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t actively look forward to The Game Awards. …

Gamescom kicks off next week. While it doesn’t quite have the general industry hype that E3 tends to have, it’s easily my favourite of the great big Western video game conventions. Open to the public, Gamescom sees more than 360 000 people through its hallowed halls every year, looking to celebrate the latest available and upcoming video games. It’s also hosted in one of my favourite cities on the planet, Cologne. I’ve gone on a bit of a tangent, I suppose.

Gamescom The Gamescom Awards are always a little weird. The nominees for this year’s Gamescom Awards were announced well before Gamescom itself kicked off. For games to have been nominated, the publishers had to have paid a nominal fee, along with a host of other little rules – which makes them all a little suspect.
