Seeing as how the PS5 and Xbox Series X are preparing to land this year, you’d probably think that the next console war will be fought with resolutions over features, future-proofed machines that aim to increase the pixel count thrown at your eyeballs if your budget can afford the TV for it. For the Xbox Series X, that’s not entirely the case as that console will be aiming its power at something far more important: Resolution!
According to a study by the graphics card powerhouse, having a high-end GPU and a bleeding edge monitor can yield a significant advantage to your overall kill/death ratio. An advantage that could give a skilled gamer a staggering 90% boost, which is simply bonkers maths.
The current consoles – at least their upgraded, more powerful counterparts – have 4K as on of their great big, back of the box marketing bullet points. And it’s true! Both the PlayStation 4 Pro and the more powerful Xbox One can push out 4K graphics, natively and using fancy rendering techniques to lighten the load. Gaming with the silkiest and smoothest of frame-rates makes a game look unbelievably sexy, something that Call of Duty has known for many a year now. So what’s the deal? Why is Destiny 2 remaining with a more cinematic frame-rate when the potential to do more on console is there? Because doing just that would diminish the game.
The 2.4.0 edition of Diablo 3 has plenty of new features, ready to entice players back into action. Oh, it may also be completely broken on console.
The signature look of the Call of Duty franchise has always been in the 60 frames per second ballpark. And that makes a difference. A big difference. Bigger than all those 1080 peas, to me at least. But if you’ve been hesitant to upgrade your console, here’s some bad news for you: Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 won’t be hitting that frame-rate this year on the older generation.
