Next year, Sunset Overdrive’s Insomniac takes a stab at giving the wallcrawler a new lease on life. On paper, it sounds perfect: A studio known for energetic and radical games getting the chance to develop some massive fan-love for the webhead in their own particular style. With Spider-Man Homecoming proving that there’s still plenty of love out there for the iconic New York hero, the time to strike the iron is now.

E3 saw plenty of new Spider-Man footage take to the skyscrapers of New York, but there was one universal critique of Insomniac’s web-slinging system: It wasn’t fast enough. That’s an issue, which the developer says has been fixed since E3.

Activision’s previous two Spider-Man games are perhaps the prime example here of lifting a few ideas from its rival and running wild with them. An idea that developer Insomniac Games wants to avoid, preferring instead to be more inspired by their distinguished competition.

At E3 2017, Insomniac had plenty more Spider-Man to show off as their version of the iconic webhead is forging his own path and identity outside of the comic books.

Warner Bros. Interactive and DC Comics realised early on that having the right character isn’t a guarantee to success. Said character needs the right developer sidekick and a freedom to push the properties in new directions. That focus worked gangbusters for the Arkham series, Injustice and Telltale’s Batman game. A focus that Marvel also wants to emulate with their upcoming projects.

In a recent livestream, Vice President of Marvel’s Digital Media Group Ryan Penagos confirmed that Insomniac's Spider-Man game will release later this year. Which sounds simply amazing.

Spider-Man may have the worst luck in the world, but he’s still a hero who is quite simply spectacular. A facet of the wallcrawler that developer Insomniac wants to show off in their game.
