Another year, another Ubisoft Forward conference! The French publisher and developer kept things short and sweet this year, saving its biggest gun for last while providing plenty of updates for many of its other games. No, there wasn't a Splinter Cell reveal. Sorry guys. But there was plenty of other stuff!

Despite collecting three of Mario’s most well-known games, Super Mario 3D All Stars doesn’t justify their porting onto the Switch. With minimal improvements, few features that truly make it feel like an “Anniversary celebration” and some bafflingly lazy design choices, 3D All Stars feels like more like a quick cash grab.

Nintendo is kicking off the celebrations by doing what it does best: Reviving Mario’s greatest hits and charging you yet again to experience them on its Switch console.

Announced earlier in the year, LEGO Super Mario is exactly what it sounds like: A chance to create your own Super Mario levels, bringing the mustachioed plumber from his 2D origins and into a more three-dimensional setting. So how much will it cost you?

“For Lord’s sake!” Nintendo cries. “We gave you two whole Mario Makers, stop using Dreams!”

It’s so clever, how did no one think of this before? You take Super Mario Bros, which in its most recognisable form is still that of a 2D game wherein you inflict massive brain trauma on Mario by directing his skull through solid bricks, and you combine that with LEGO to capture that aesthetic and give it a more creative approach in our plane of existence.

How has this never been done before? On the one hand, you have LEGO. The premier name in creativity and construction, literal building blocks for the imagination. On the other hand you have Super Mario, Nintendo’s most famous mascot who made a name for himself by stomping on turtles and busting blocks for a living. Put the two together, and you’ve got LEGO Mario, a match made in heaven between franchises.

The announcement came as a teaser revealed to celebrate Mario Day…and that’s about all we know so far.
