What began with all of the buzz and hype quickly faded, as Google’s attempt to muscle into the gaming space with cloud-based software that could stream your chosen title from wherever you happen to be (provided that your internet connection was up to scratch), just hasn’t taken off within the larger gaming consciousness.

This week was meant to be a momentous one for Sony. After months of silence save for a single broadcast in which the sooth voice of hardware wizard Mark Cerny filled the room with tech details that promised future-proofed gaming technology, Sony was ready to lift the veil on their plans for the PlayStation 5. That won’t be happening this week. Sony has postponed its June 4 PlayStation 5 event, in light of the protests that are currently taking part across all of North America so that ”more important voices can be heard.”

It's a simple digital collection of old standards, card games, mechanical toys and pub classics - though not all of them transfer well to the medium. Those that do are a delight to play. It doesn't have the usual charm you'd find in Nintendo games, but the presentation makes up for it with familiarity, fun tutorials and interesting bits of trivia.

You can throw video game servers onto that list, because no matter the fandom or the passion for any particular game, there will come a day when the lights are turned off and that final multiplayer match is had.

Is there any hope for the Xbox Series X, in giving Sony and Nintendo a run for their money? Only if they switch gears and brands, to revive one of the most beloved names in the land of the rising sun. According to the wildest of rumours, Microsoft looks set to break into Japan by giving their next console a brand spankin’ new name: The SEGA Series X.
