The new Xbox may have original TV content

The big thing in the world of TV entertainment at the moment is original shows per content platform; think House of Cards on Netflix or The Wild on DSTV along with Hulu which offers over 25 original series on their platform.

Now it looks like Xbox want to get in on this action with the latest rumour being that Microsoft is sourcing original content that will showcase only on the new Xbox to those with a Xbox Live subscription.

This really is how the world is moving and companies like HBO or DSTV should be worried. Right now I have a DSTV subscription that costs me in the region of R650 a month and a Netflix account that I pay R100 a month for… My family spends 90% of our TV time streaming Netflix to multiple devices and DSTV is now only used by me to watch mighty Liverpool take on the rest of the plebs in the Premier League.

That and the kids watch cartoons on it when both the wife and I are streaming shows from Netflix. But I am tempted to buy another Netflix subscription to get over that limit.

But back to the rumour, if it is true and Microsoft are targeting original content then this would be yet another way for them to take over the living room and with their built in Netflix app I would no longer need to swap between consoles… that is if they can get their Netflix app to work as well as the PS3’s.

So you tell me, are you ready for a full on streaming world when it comes to your TV entertainment? TV schedules be damned!

I don’t watch TV, so I don’t care if it live streams alien porn from Mars while washing the dishes and feeding the dog… As long as it kicks ass playing GAMES I’m happy, anything else is “nice to have’s” I’ll probably never use…

VIDEOGAMES. Whats all this TV shit? I want all 100% of my money to go towards a machine that is devoted to VIDEOGAMES. VIDDDDDDEEEEEEEEOOOOOOOOOGGGGGGGGGAMES.

P.S. I want a console that is a CONSOLE, VIDEOGAME CONSOLE.

The reason I got a 360 instead of a PS3 is because SONY marketed the CONSOLE as A BLU-RAY DVD player that can also play VIDEOGAMES… But cost more than twice as much as the EEEXBOX VIDEOGAMES MACHINE THAT PLAYED VIDEOGAMES.

VIDEOGAMES PLEASE. I dont watch TV because my 2hours of freedom are spent playing VIIIIIIIDDDDDEEEEEOOOOOOGGGGGGGAMES.

FUCK THE NEXT GEN and all their hipster cats on the top floor with their TROJAN horse ideas to gain a share in the cool Apple pie TV market.

P.S. Kinect 2 can be shoved up where the sun dont shine… not sideways. Stupid Trojan horse.

    Videogames.

Your right. They say less is more, but when it comes to the CEOs Less is less money. So lets just fcking complicate things to the point that we all just bloody accept the indoctrination.

Remember how we all laughed our asses off at that Horse Armor DLC, well guess who had the last laugh. Humans forget very quickly and before long, 10 years from now everything will be a service that we will more than willingly gladly buy into.

Its all about control. The Kinect 2 is the start of it. Telemarketing, advertising, service providers, DRM for Data capturing… we will all be wired into the mainframe.

The PS2 was the last real true gaming machine.

Truth! It’s always been about control. cutting out the used game market, controlling when we even play our games.

Micro-transactions,IAP,Freemium,DLC,DRM,Online passes,Kinect,In game advertising …. is this what gaming has become?…..to the point where kinect can monitor you, Origin has access to your data on your hard drive….this is not gaming ….. This is digital Slavery …

PS2 was indeed the last true gaming machine

Yip, I see the xbox MINI as a tester for what we have always predicted, and that is on-line distribution. If it is a success I see the Middle man being cut out completely in the near future for all games.

You know even though Ninty was kind of slow to the whole online market, they were like the sweet innocent lil console. for me the wii was still true to gaming however much people wanted to criticize it. it even had backwards compatibility. more than the scumbags at MS and SONY could speak about. I have strong faith in the wiiU, I might be in the minority but I think alot of people will migrate to that console.

I do agree with the xbox mini, it’s nothing but a tester. I sure hope people are smart enough to boycott the damn thing

            April 12, 2013 at 09:35

That’s actually true, of all the console makers, Ninty has actually been the purest. It hasn’t tried to veer of into a non-gaming direction. It hasn’t tried to cram superfluous crap into a bag and sell it as a reason to pay for online access, nor has it tried to provide anything but a gaming device.

If you can play Netflix via a computer hooked up to 40inch TV, they why… why do you need to do it through xbox or ps3? I actually use crackle, hulu and netflix on my PC, and I find it more convenient than running an app on either the box or the ps3.

Similarly, why do you need facebook or twitter on a gaming console? I can understand on an iphone, an android phone or even a blackberry, because you can easily share a picture you’ve taken, but on a console. What exactly is the function?

Sure you can say “social media” but, seriously do you really want grandma, your boss or your pub friends to find out you just unlocked a trophy…? I’d rather wear a Star Wars T-shirt…. (shudder)

I still dont know what the Wii U is. NINTENDO FOREVER… But after they shafted us GameCube owners to gun for the iPhone casual market I moved on.

            April 12, 2013 at 10:00

Yeah, we’ve spoken about this before, but I’m in the same boat. As a GameCube owner, the shafting we received especially in South Africa still stings. Yes I know it’s been 10 years, and I should get over it, but the memory… she lingers… 🙁

            April 12, 2013 at 10:04

Yup, despite what people might think, casual gaming is still gaming. people tend to forget we all started out playing ‘casual’ games….the whole gaming device becoming a multimedia device is just bleh and leaves a blue mark on my tongue from sucking popeye sherbet

            April 12, 2013 at 11:03

FB and twitter should never be on a console. But netflix/hulu/crackle are perfect fits for a console. It’s already hooked up to the TV and I’d prefer to just have one device around the TV.

Sure, I sound like a spoiled child. But I have tried hard the last 2 years to be happy with what I have. I am, the 360 and its single player games kick ass.

But I tried to get excited about the DS, 3DS, VITA, Wii U… but with studio closures, low sales, poor marketing… these things pan out exactly how we predicted they would 6 months before the release on the comments section in LG, I kind of get frustrated. The same with the next gen. Any fool including PATCHER can see the shit storm ahead.

Tired man. Gaming is becoming a joke.

Take me back to 2005 when I had a giant gamer boner forthe release of Gears of War, Bioshock and Mass Effect. The Graphics and emersion blew my fucking mind. 🙂 Not to mention INNOVATION, cover systems, speech wheels, no huds in DEADSPACE…

youtube is going to charge users for its original content too, There is a vast and rich amount of amazing original content on youtube like machinima amongst others. I don’t think this too much of a threat to our television service providers but this depends on the quality of the content. In any case I hate where all this is heading … gaming is gaming and tv is tv …. as a gamer I feel like the middle child

I’ve been wanting to kick DsTV in the nads for a while now. The only reason I have it is sports. If I can get a viable sports viewing service (free or paying, I don’t care) then I will jump on that train in no time.

I have both the Netflix and Huluplus going at home, but I don’t even use that so often. The TV is used mostly for gaming, along with LIVE sports and the odd occasion of watching News channels like CNN or SKY.

Or a phone that makes calls, emails, can view websites has a built in GPS and other useful apps.

Now it seems we are forced to pay for over expensive media hubs. PC for the win… But I would rather just press start. Thats why the console beat out the PC.

Promises? Facts? Dude, it cuts both ways. All of this is based on rumours, some more plausible than others. It doesn’t matter if it’s negative or positive. There are no “facts” yet. Microsoft is yet to confirm anything.

Thats a rubbish argument, Cellphones where made to be phones.
They then stepped it up and added extra features.
Exactly what is going on with the “Future” consoles.
They are adding extra usefull features that many people will welcome!

You don’t get it, a console is there to converge media and gaming. Sony failed at this miserably trying to force Blu Ray into homes whereas for the cost of one Blue Ray one could a month of Netflix. It would be moronic for Sony to not launch a streaming service considering the huge library of movies it has.

Well where Sony will have streaming services they won’t abandon the core and still deliver on producing a variety of GAMES to play. Unlike M$ that would abandon the very reason people bought into the Xbox brand in the first place.

Actually thinking of the good ol’ PS2 days(something I never owned), Sony was at the top of the technology pile. Now all they have is the Playstation brand and nothing else.

I got a 6mb line and is subscribed to SkyGo (Similar to DSTV)… I can’t get DSTV where I live, so I was looking at alternatives… Anyway, I can’t seem to watch high quality or even to mention HD. On Medium, if I use the wifi on my phone and updating an app, then I get buffering issues…

I am using a 6mbps line for Netflix but I barely get full speed on it, most of the time I watch stuff in medium SD or maybe high SD, but the quality is still very decent actually – I’ve been told by people on my Twitter feed that they get HD sometimes with a 4Mbps even, so there’s a chance that it will be decent enough for most people

No blame geography. As much as people seem to forget, we’re not a small province in Europe, nor are we a state between Alabama and Missouri, we’re actually at the southern most tip of a huge continent that straddles two oceans. We’re thousands of kilometres away from the major internet hubs of the world, Europe and Asia.

Sure we could blame Telkom, but let’s also be realistic. It’s going to take a serious amount of investment to get another undersea cable laid down between us and the hubs, and for the most part, growth of internet usage in South Africa has been traditionally slow. Ironically, what is booming is mobile internet use (and not just in South Africa but also in the rest of Africa).
