Get your geek on with these upcoming local events

You may have noticed that we’re kind of geeky here on The Movies. But in a good way. It’s also a perfectly good excuse to have when Kervyn, Noelle and Lourens don luchadore masks and proceed to clobber each other with flaming steel chairs while shouting out slogans from mid-nineties runs of comic books, Doctor Who and Game of Thrones.

But the thing is, we’re not alone in this love. You guys are pretty damn accepting of this culture, and we love you for that. So if you want to hobknob with some fellow nerds and bask in some pop culture fun, here’s a couple of events that you might want to check out soon. Events that don’t rhyme with Shlock Shon.

ICON

The big daddy of conventions for fans of everything from cosplay to Magic The Gathering. The event has been growing in recent years, gaining momentum with each successful convention held. ICON has it all for fans of alternative culture, from anime screenings, board games, gaming, LARP and shops aplenty. ICON will be held from 12-14 July this year.

For more details, check out the Facebook page here.

UPCON

Head on over for some varsity fun, as UPCON also attracts a sizable crowd of fans for its annual anime screenings, Warhammer tabletop tournaments and card games aplenty. Also, more LARPING, which I kinda still want to do one day. LIGHTNING BOLT! Reactions are varied, but most regular attendees say that it’s one of the most inviting events around, with super-friendly locals more than willing to share some space for out of town visitors.

UPCON will take place from April 20-21 this year, on the familiar main campus at the University of Pretoria.

KIN CON

Also looking to attract quite a few otaku is the ever reliable KIN CON. That’ll be happening May 25 at the Recreation Centre in Randburg. Cosplay, anime and comic books reign supreme here, so if you’re not in costume, you’re going to stand out. You normal weirdos.

More details, on the Facebook page.

CO/Mix Open Day

Last, but not least, is the CO/Mix open day. With the first year jitters out of the way, year two will see more comic book fans and professionals descend on Cape Twon from September 7-8. Catering to the local side of the comic book industry especially, entrance is free and will also see an additional workshop held from 9-10 Septmeber.

More deets, right here.

Free Comic Book Day

We’ve got a round-up of those events happening locally, with that article being regularly updated as well. Check it out here. FREE COMICS!

Thanks to Abigail Holden, Tarryn-Leigh Wood and Moray Rhoda for the links and info.

Cape Town does Dragonfire at UCT every year over the closest weekend to Woman’s Day but I’m not sure what events they have these days. Magic, LARPs and role-playing for sure, rest I’m not certain on.

DragonFire has had a Munchkin Tournament for the last 5 years. As well as boardgaming (thanks to Skycastle Games with help from Outer Limits and Fanaticus), V:TES, Anime, etc…

Woman’s Day weekend, Kramer Law Building, Middle Campus, UCT.

Be there or be a shape with four equal sides and four ninety degree angles.
