Dan Harmon says COMMUNITY movie "will happen", it's just all about timing

#SixSeasonsAndAMovie! We used to brandish about that hashtag as a mark of pride, but nowadays it just makes us sad. The source of our melancholy is that while the inside joke/prediction on acclaimed fan-favourite meta-comedy Community looked like it might actually come true one day, when the show was rescued from cancellation after 5 seasons by Yahoo Screen, those hopes were severely crushed when its subsequent sixth season lost the VOD service a reported $42 million. Ouch.

While that appeared to be about as final a nail in a coffin as there could possibly be, creator Dan Harmon is still optimistic about the show’s grand plan – specifically that final step of actually making a movie. He explained on Larry King Now that Community “would make a great movie,” and that it “will happen”. There are just some tricky logistical issues to work out.

“If I pull out a typewriter right now and write a Community movie just for my own heart and mind, then I have to go through the heartbreak and agony of finding out which of the people are going to show up to make it. On the other hand, if I wait for everybody to line up and say ‘we’re all out of work and ready to do a Community movie,’ then I guess that’s a bad idea, too.”

In other words, you can’t do it now. But you also can’t do it too late either. Like I said: tricky. Whenever it does happen – and as about as gigantic a fan of the show as you can get, I’m just going to believe Harmon that it will happen – I will just be happy to be hanging out at Greendale Community College again. Yes, there were some missteps in its fourth Harmon-less season, but when Community was on point it gave us some of the best episodes of television in the modern age. The self-aware genre riffs, the wacky characters, and the hilarious in-jokes were all unmatched on TV, and I need these people back in my life.

And as you may recall, there a couple of brotherly directors who got their start on Community and have since gone on to helm some of the biggest movies in the world. I am of course talking about Joe and Anthony Russo, the brothers behind Captain America: Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War, and who will soon also be helming Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War two-parter. Can you imagine if Harmon were able to get them back in the directors’ seats again?! That would be more than just cool… cool cool cool!
