The breakout first season of hit anime show Attack on Titan aka Shingeki No Kyojin was simply jaw-dropping (also, jaw-ripping off and jaw-punched into red mist), and ended on a very intriguing cliffhanger. That was back in September 2013 though, which means that the wait for its second season (only expected in 2016??!!) has been excruciating. News of the development of a live-action movie adaptation has helped to assuage fans a little, but with us having seen nothing more than some cast posters thus far, it hasn’t meant much.

But now we’re finally getting something proper to get excited about as the first footage from the film (via Kotaku) has just popped up online. And it looks good. Well, at least the short bit of footage you can see which doesn’t involve garish Japanese TV text overlays or reaction shots from a very diverse in-studio panel. We don’t get to see the anime’s iconic 3D maneuver gear – probably the hardest part of the adaptation to get right – in action, but we do get a very menacing look at some of the titans themselves!

DAT COLOSSAL TITAN!

The basic feel I’m getting from this brief footage is that they’ve captured the anime’s pitch black tone, not trying to play it up for a wider audience. And I applaud them for that, as Attack on Titan‘s shockingly violent moments and it’s constant sense of dread is what made the show so good in the first place.

And just in case you forgot – since you don’t really get to see much of them in the footage – here are all those character posters that were previously released.

Attack on Titan will be released as a two-part film in Japan somewhere in the middle of the year. We’ll probably have to wait until it hits home release (which will probably still be before the anime’s second season) before we can check it out.
