RUMOUR: Armie Hammer is back in the Batsuit for JUSTICE LEAGUE

Aw damn it! It looks like our campaign to get Darryn to play Batman in the upcoming Justice League movie is failing. I’m not 100% certain, but I think it may have had something to do with him not being able to bend at the hips in his suit. Bending at the hips is kind of important. Also, Batboobs.

Somebody else though who’s spent some time in a Batsuit is the Lone Ranger himself, Armie Hammer. He tested and landed the part back when George Miller was still set to direct. That version subsequently fell apart, but now it looks he may still be donning the cape and cowl after all.

MovieHole has apparently heard from “a very good source” who informs them that Armie Hammer is currently the frontrunner to play the Dark Knight in Justice League, the script for which has already been completed by Will Beale, and would more than likely see a younger, fresher version of the character teaming up with the likes of Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern and Martian Manhunter.

This actually all makes perfect sense. When Hammer landed the role back in 2007, he was a complete unknown. But now he already has both The Social Network and Mirror Mirror on his resume and will soon be headlining Gore Verbinski’s The Lone Ranger, so he certainly will be recognizable enough to act as an audience lure. The previous film was just a few days from shooting when the plug was pulled due to a combination of the Writers Guild strike and the Australian government (where they would be shooting) denying them a 40% tax rebate. But before that Hammer had already spent quite a bit of time rehearsing for the character (by all accounts, Hammer looked phenomenal in the black leather duds) and did various screen tests for WB, which they all liked. So why go through all of that again?

What this “very good source” does say though, is that Hammer would only be up for the part in a the JL movie, not any solo efforts. Which means that either WB are actually not planning to have solo spinoff movies as some predicted, or they’re going to have spinoffs but only for those character who haven’t had any major screen time ala Wonder Woman, Flash etc. The third option of course, is that they’re actually going to get a different actor to play Bats in a solo movie, while Hammer is bound to the JL universe.

That last part only makes sense if WB decide to go with a much different take on the character for the solo effort. Maybe we’ll see Terry McGinnis as the Batman of the future, or maybe an old Batman inspired by Frank Miller’s Dark Knight Returns?

Either way, we still have a way to go before we get any casting news, as WB still need to get all their super powered ducks in a row. Ben Affleck has already turned down the directing gig, and according to industry insiders, Ruben Fleischer is the next man in the queue. I have a feeling a lot will be hinging on the success of his upcoming flick, Gangster Squad, as that will demonstrate his ability to balance an ensemble cast.

When we did our Batman casting Round-Table, Darryn actually picked Armie Hammer for the role, so I’m sure that he’s ecstatic at this possibility, but what do the rest of you think? You think he’d be good as the Dark Knight?
