Doom 4 is doomed

Hell

I will never forget the first time I faced down hell’s demons in the first Doom, or the very first time that I picked up Doom 2’s imp destroying, demon-death-dealing double-barrelled shotgun. If I close my eyes and  think very hard I might even remember a little of Doom 3, what little of it I could see in all that darkness. Doom is just one of those prolific titles that just about everybody who plays games has fond memories of. Don’t expect to carve any new Doom 4 memories any time soon though.

The game has been in development for 5 years now, and there’s little to show for it. according to an exposé by Kotaku, Doom 4 has been in some serious trouble for years – and has even been rebooted before release.

id’s core team, it seems, was too busy with the mediocre Rage to notice what was happening with Doom 4 development, and now that they’re done (and that Rage sequels have thankfully been scrapped) the entire team is working on Doom – and coming to conflict about its direction. It apparently was beginning to resemble Call of Duty before work started anew.

But Doom 4 is still coming – only it’ll now be coming to Next Gen consoles, and of course, PC.

"An earlier version of Doom 4 did not exhibit the quality and excitement that id and Bethesda intend to deliver and that Doom fans worldwide expect," Bethesda’s marketing boss Pete Hines said in a statement.

"As a result, id refocused its efforts on a new version of Doom 4 that promises to meet the very high expectations everyone has for this game and this franchise. When we’re ready to talk about the Doom 4 id is making, we will let folks know."

I really have to wonder just how relevent id is these days. Their idTech 5 engine is now solely used for Zenimax projects; whereas their id Tech 3 engine, the one that powered Quake 3 arena, was used for pretty much everything – a role taken over by Epic’s Unreal engine. Their last actual releases have been remakes and ports; the likes of a remastered Doom 3, Quake Live and Wolfenstein 3D classic. Zenimax, I fear, may have bought a lemon.

Is id even relevant anymore, and do you give a damn about Doom 4?

I got over Doom after Doom3. I wouldn’t be too upset if Doom4 never surfaced.

I would play it if it came out naturally. But I dunno. All news just seems so bland after the Lucasarts bombshell from this morning 🙁

Don’t mention the Lucas Arts thing. Still have red eyes from it. Was looking forward to Star wars 1313. Hopefully it will be taken up by a 3rd party. On the Doom 4 thing….meh. Doom 3 was boring as hell. Clive Barker’s Undying was scarier.

Doubt it. Disney would NEVER let anyone work on something they own the rights to.

Seriously guys, you make it sound as if Disney is this repressive, conservative, PG hell-hole devoid of any creativity. Marvel Studios THROUGH Disney Movie Studios are the guys responsible for the Avengers movie, and the individual avenger flicks (Thor, Ironman, Hulk etc.).

Honestly, George Lucas has set the bar so low already, Disney could effectively breath life back into that stagnant mess of a franchise.

Maybe Disney will revive Grim Fandango!

The funny thing is, I was actually thinking the same thing this morning. Grim Fandango always felt like it could have come from Tim Burton’s mind, but where I am a little worried is that Disney’s game division isn’t focussed on anything but social and tablet gaming.

Would be nice though to play a new Grim Fandango game… 🙂

Same, Doom 3 was really bland. I remember suffering through it and wondering how the hell id got it so wrong, and then they made RAGe, and it dawned on me….Carmack is a hack. (Incidentally Doom 3 also killed my PC gaming fanboi phase).

I didn’t play much of Doom 3 as my PC at the time couldn’t handle it, bought it cheap a couple years ago, but got bored quickly. I did really like Rage though. Would be happy to play a Doom 4, if it went a bit more back to roots than Doom 3 was… Would need to bring back hidden passages, occasional open spaces and powerups.

James is the a game that you ever actually enjoyed? except maybe for Sudoku. I mean come on doom 3 was a huge benchmark graphically and not to mentioned that it rivaled the best survival horrors at that time.

Yeah, quite a few actually. Top 10 current gen games that the Banana enjoyed in the last three or so years (in no particular order):
          Spec Ops: The Line,
          Ni No Kuni,
          Dragon’s Dogma,
          Gears of War,
          Uncharted 2,
          Saints Row the Third,
          Terrania,
          Sleeping Dogs,
          Infamous,
          Bastion,

Oh and throw in Witcher 2 as well as a bonus ball. I mean I could write up a quick list of 25 of my favourite games of the last 5 years, and easily expand that to 50 or more for the next 5. lol, I might give the impression that I’m this morbid creature who hates everything, but in fact, there are games (that cross genres) that I adore, games that I tolerate and games that I absolutely loathe…

It just so happens, you get to hear more about the ones I dislike than the ones I like.

Give it to Gearbox lol! More poorly-crafted, low-quality cash-grabs fuel the death of this industry and bring the rebirth of gaming closer… #GamingAsAReligion

I can’t wait to see what Carmack can produce on the next gen technology, probably something called Giga textures! Rage looks beautiful and is probably the only console game I know of this generation that runs at 60 fps. Too bad it played like an old shoe.
