It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. As we rapidly approach the halfway mark through the year (what? already?) it’s time to reflect on the good and the bad. Today, we’ll concentrate on the awful.
While 2013 has given us some truly remarkable games already; games such as Bioshock Infinite, Luigi’s Mansion 2, Tomb Raider, Ni No Kuni, Fire Emblem, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance and more. Those were all great.
But what about the bad ones? I would have said that Aliens: Colonial Marines would have taken that accolade easily…but then I played something, far, far worse.
So, five months in to 2013, what’s the worst game you’ve played this year?

Well, I only ever see you play Dota. But recently I’ve seen you change up that strategy.

Yeah and don’t forget I do some 3DS and Vita gaming when you’re not looking 😛

SimCity.
Maybe not a terribly bad game, but the amount of admin (DRM, no save) attached to it made it unbearable for me.

Spirk game, thought you’d say that Geoff.
For me, I had a unplayed Red Faction 2, loaded it up, worst 44 minutes of my life. Promptly uninstalled and drank to forget.
Currently playing Red Faction Armageddon, and really enjoying it!

Dead Space 3
Not a bad game per say, just got really boring and “meh” from the middle onward. Finished the game just to see the ending, but it was a chore to do so.

Havn’t really played much NEW games, I’m struggling to work through my backlog. only new games I’ve played are, Revengeance , DmC, Tomb raider, RE 6 (PC), Ni No Kuni, walking dead, but in all honesty, as horrible as a game like walking dead is, i hate… no I ABHOR DmC, I really really hate that game and everything about it.
So for me: DmC

Why did you not like Walking Dead?

Because I’m a survival horror/zombie fan, that game was an insult to my fandom. gameplay was repetitive, it had broken mechanics and story was horrible…sucky game!

May 10, 2013 at 10:51
The FPS I take it then

Lol I played through it, and man, I can’t stomach it. but it was a fun game … I know, I sound Bi-polar, but … yeah . The ending made me throw up. The story was cliched as hell, the combat had little to know depth but the combos were fun though. I must say the Art Style, phew, was fantastic though

I’m gonna have to say SimCity… I spent a lot of money on the digital deluxe edition, and I’m still wondering why. SimCity is a potentially brilliant game, hidden under layers of unnecessary always-online nonsense and endless bugs that eventually render cities broken. Truly disappointing.

Yeah. Played it a lot when it came out, but it lasted like 2 weeks iirc. Haven’t played in weeks either. Sad.

May 10, 2013 at 10:48
That wasn’t that bad… I also played FF13 this year, and quite enjoyed it. The expansion however…. wow that was bad! If you thought 13 was bad, run from its expansion!

Haha … ahh Lighting’s debut game … the game that had you running straight for most of the day. I liked that game a lot. FF XII was way worse imo

XII was to boring and the battle system, my word ….. gave a new meaning to mundane. I even played without gambits and still it was boring as hell, though gambits would’ve been awesome in XIII for the AI party members, I would have LURVED that

I have to say I haven’t played anything shit this year. I am very careful in what I buy, I read reviews from LG only, cus I trust each and everyone of the writers. I’d trust Darryn with my as yet unborn child. I’d trust Geoff with making the dumplings, Gavin with the neighbour’s kids CoD addiction, and Yolanda with defusing any situation that all the above mentioned could create. Only one statement above is true. WHICH ONE IS IT!?

Well, I’ve mostly been playing Mass Effect 1 to 3. But there was this one weekend I played Diablo 3. So, by process of elimination, it must be Diablo 3! I really need to catch up on some newer games, but ME is still keeping me so busy with the DLC I decided to finally download. Plus I need time to do my breathing exercises and meditations! Need more time for GAMES!

Ok I just realised I have only played two 2013 releases so far and both of them were great.
FarCry 3 and Bioshock infinite. So if I had to chose “the worst” it would have to be FarCry3 even though it was good.
Man, when did I start playing so few new release games?
Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew
May 10, 2013 at 11:21
I’m also an idiot. I played Crysis3. Phew. So I did play 2 games. Infinite is still my fav so worst game of the year so far has to go to Crysis3 which was actually pretty cool in a popcorn shooter kinda way.

I dont really play bad games because I read reviews and previews although bad ones sometimes get it. I have been fortunate this year. Not so much last year. Few very bad IOS game apps.

I won Aliens: Colonial Marines in a comp a month ago. I read all the reviews and didn’t believe that it could be that bad. I started it up and did the update hoping that it will fix some of the gripes reviewers had. I started the game and instantly it felt “wrong”. It didn’t grab me at all. It irritated me from the get go and I spent about 2 hours with it and couldn’t stand it. I took it out of my PS3, apologized profusely to my console for contaminating it with such filth and sold the game for R150. I could have given it away but I felt that I need to be compensated for the emotional distress and scaring that was inflicted upon my person by this game. I was really looking forward to this game and I was amped to play against aliens and getting into the Alien universe and lore again and it was bitterly disappointing.
I also won the Star Trek game last week and played a bit of that. I am enjoying it very much regardless of the bad reviews it has been getting lately. It is fun to play and it feels good getting back into the Trek universe. I seldom base my enjoyment or judge a game based on review as the reviewer is spoiled for choice and has already high “standard” and expectations. So many games have received low scores which I absolutely loved because it was the right game at the right time for me. But in the case of Aliens, I absolutely agree with reviewers (my opinion here) and I believe they should have slated it even more based on the misleading marketing of the E3 footage and screen captures. Yeah… that’s my story. 🙂

All old ones that I finally got to this year:
Deus Ex Human Revolution: Some nice ideas, terrible pacing.
Rage: Pretty, but ultimately boring. Hated the gun play.
Fear 3: They missed the part in the title that says FEAR. More like Snore 3.
Luckily I got them all on special and traded them in for more than I paid.

I’ve actually managed to stay clear of the funky games so far, but obviously the year is barely halfway and I might still get stuck in the muck of a truly crummy mindnumbing title.
