We’ve written about the rumours surrounding a possible Gears of War remaster on the Xbox One so many times now, that we’ve been convinced it’ll show up at E3 this year. A recent Xbox One test of the first game’s iconic (and horrendously broken) multiplayer was confirmed by multiple sources, making it look more than likely we’d be getting Gears of War redux. A new listing on Brazil’s classification board says it’ll be called Gears of War: Ultimate Edition. Yes, the same board that outed the Dishonored remaster.
The be honest, that’s a terrible name for what we presume is a collection of the numbered Gears of War games – especially as its title suggests it’s just the first game. I’d imagine fans are looking forward to a Masterchief Collection-styled package of all three games (with some even, oddly, even hoping for Gears of War: Judgment). If the games are set to be released in a piecemeal way, expect much vitriol on the internet.
And that’s about it. That’s all the Brazilian rating is able to tell us; no mention of platform, time of availability or what exactly makes this re-release an Ultimate Edition. It could, as unlikely as it may seem, end up being an Xbox 360 re-release, with all of the DLC in tow – but I’m not quite sure Microsoft’s that stupid.
Gears of War was fantastic, and its broken, but deliriously fun multiplayer consumed many a night. As I said earlier, I’ve no real problem with remasters and re-releases, but I’m far more interested in the new Gears of War that’s coming from Rod Fergusson and Black Tusk. We’ve seen and heard roughly nothing about that game.
