Midweek Mouth-off: Clock watching

47 second read

For today’s movie fans, cinema visits can be a sticky issue. On the one hand there’s the opportunity to escape reality for a few hours, disappearing into another world on a big screen. On the other hand, there’s your fellow cinema patrons to contend with – potentially noisy, selfish and all-round disruptive – who ruin your experience…

So today’s question is, when do you tend to watch movies at the cinema? Have you found a time slot where you’re less likely to encounter the trolls?  First thing in the morning, the late show, weekdays at 5pm? Or is it all a question of luck on the day?

It’s a lot of luck on the day, but I’ve found the best time is the earlier shows during the day. Also, go just before payday.

During the week. If I have to see a movie that will change my soul, it will be on a Wednesday. I cannot abide the noisy, slurping, popcorn crunching (as in, with mouth wide open for all to catch a whiff of gingervitus) people when I am trying to engross myself in a long movie. I’d rather get the DVD!

The very best times to watch a movie: Sunday morning (almal is mos by die kerk). You’ll have 1 or 2 other people there. I did this with Avatar and Life of Pi when they were both in their prime (1st week of release). Then also Monday night. This mostly goes for Ster Kinekor since everyone is waiting for Tuesday half price. I’ve never gone wrong with those 2 times.

I only go to a cinema once a year now and that’s when it’s a family thing. I get too irritated with patrons, shitty image quality and 1000% mark-up popcorn.
Setup a decent kit at home a few years back and watch Blu-ray movies at home in peace. Just have to get the Mrs to stop pausing every time she decides she has to get up and do something now…
