I ain’t fooling you when it comes to April, because we’ve got another banger of a month on the way! While the bigger releases that were seen in the first quarter of the year seems to have slowed down in April, that doesn’t mean that there isn’t some fun to be had.

Days Gone may smack of your typical sandbox. Massive, open and probably filled to the nines with all manner of diversions, developer Sony Bend’s upcoming romp in the Freaker apocalypse needs something to set itself apart from the pack. Needing to be more than just a love letter to the horror genre that spawned it, the studio is banking on their particular sandbox being deadly, unforgiving and completely random.

Plenty of games, a decent running time and news on what lies ahead. No longer just the domain of Nintendo and their series of Direct presentations, but an idea that’s also home to Sony now! The home of PlayStation has a new series focusing on exactly those key points, and in the spirit of things, let’s get the show rolling …

Nintendo’s has the right idea for building up buzz on their upcoming games. Called Nintendo Direct, these irregularly scheduled episodes highlight upcoming games from across the Big N’s library, favouring both small and large announcements. Heck, sometimes those announcements even have a theme to them, like a Pokémon Nintendo Direct! It’s a damn good idea, and one that Sony looks to take a page from as the Japanese giant will be launching its own take on Nintendo Direct, with Sony State of Play.

Days Gone is Sons of Anarchy meets The Walking Dead, and I don’t want to live in a world where that crossover isn’t a good idea. In fact, that TV inspiration extends deep into the DNA of Days Gone, as Deacon’s various storylines had the potential to make for a messy narrative. Developer Sony Bend’s solution? Take a page out of the Netflix book, and learn how to chill with a story that can be recapped whenever you hit the pause screen.

Upcoming end of days survival sandbox Days Gone has been hinting at the power of loss, the magnitude of the weight that it puts on the shoulders of its protagonist Deacon St. John and the survivor’s guilt that he carries with him. And in this latest trailer for the game? I’m…I’m kind of starting to feel for the guy. Oh. Oh no. OH NO HELP ME GUYS I’M FEEEEEEEEEELING!

There’s an art to whittling down Freaker numbers in Days Gone, as the actual environment in which you face off against an army of flesh-eaters is more of a puzzle box than a sandbox.
