Immortal Planet is the thinking man’s Dark Souls

By Darryn Bonthuys

There’s something to be said then for a genre that inspires other games to follow in its footsteps. Immortal Planet is one such game that bills itself as a “Souls-like” experience, an isometric action game with sprinkles of RPG and adventure mixed in. While it does boast a pretty gnarly challenge in each level, it does so with a few twists.

Destiny 2’s beta is a comfortable jump back into familiar territory

The Destiny 2 beta kicked off last night, giving players a glimpse at the tagline behind the sequel: A world without light. What’s really different then? How much has Destiny 2 changed since it last rolled out the Rise of Iron expansion in September of 2016? Well…not much at all really. Which is Destiny 2’s greatest strength.

Far Cry 5 is Ubisoft’s craziest and most American sequel ever

By Darryn Bonthuys

in :  Gaming

Far Cry 5 looked downright somber then. A serious look at the effects of cults and the ramifications of their presence on the people around them. That much is still very much true in Far Cry 5, but it’s also not the defining aspect of this latest sequel. In a hands-on session at E3, Ubisoft’s open-world shooter was madder than a bag of agitated weasels, the kind of game that makes you echo America f*** yeah with gusto.

Skull and Bones is pure high seas sailing fun from Ubisoft

By Darryn Bonthuys

Blue seas, rolling waves and a ship to sail the high seas on. Now imagine that ship being pursued through hell and back amidst a sea of salty water and cannonballs as dozens of ships chase you down in pursuit of your sweet booty. That’s the world of Skull and Bones, Ubisoft’s nautical title which takes that one idea that made Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag so memorable and builds an entire game around it.

Strange Brigade sure is weird, but also wonderfully campy on its B-movie action

By Darryn Bonthuys

in :  Gaming

I think a lot of people are going to look at Strange Brigade and write it off. Which is an absolute shame as this is a game that knows what it wants to be: Silky and focused on the four explorers unlocking tombs ahead of them. That’s admirable stuff, and the ever-present narrator helps sell this idea further with its pulpy and omnipresent narrator.

Housemarque’s next game doesn’t deviate too far from its signature path of action, as Matterfall once again combines swift visuals with even quicker gameplay. It’s also going to knock you on your ass seven ways from Sunday as this may just be the most challenging experience that Housemarque has ever released.

Gran Turismo Sport is back on the right track

By Geoffrey Tim

The truth is that Gran Turismo is no longer the undisputed king of console racers, and hasn’t been for years. There’s an added pressure on Polyphony Digital to get things right in the face of an impending Project Cars 2 and Forza 7 – and it could be just the impetus the company needs. Gran Turismo sport has all the ingredients to return it to its rightful place on the podium. Whether or not they get the recipe right is yet to be seen.

Destiny 2 – A guided tour of the new Inverted Spire Strike

By Darryn Bonthuys

A Raid may be Destiny at its most Destiniest, but I’ve loved me a good ol-fashioned strike. It’s the middle-ground between the longform structure of a Raid and the more open exploration of the sandbox activities of Destiny. A quick jaunt into an environment fraught with peril and the bullet-spongiest of bosses around. Destiny 2 has a brand new Strike featuring just those elements in the form of the Inverted Spire.
