LEGO DC Super-Villains isn't breaking the LEGO formula by any stretch of the imagination, but it is sticking to what it does best: Colourful levels, characters and puzzles aplenty.

The Justice League’s greatest supervillain team has been missing in action for several years now, thanks in part to the Legion’s de facto leader Lex Luthor actually emerging as a force for good in the world. Later this year though, Lex is ditching the S on his power armour and going back to his villainous roots as he reassembles the Legion of Doom to fight back against the massive cosmic changes that have begun to pour forth from the breach of the Source Wall that occurred in Dark Nights Metal.

In LEGO DC Super-Villains, the Justice League has disappeared, leaving Earth’s protection to a newcomer group of heroes from a parallel universe, proclaiming themselves as the ‘Justice Syndicate’. Renowned DC Super-Villains from the ‘Legion Of Doom’ discover Earth’s newest heroes may not be the heroes they claim to be.

Something I remain resolutely firm over, is the fact that the 1990s had the best villains spread across various animated series. From Batman to Mighty Max, ReBoot to X-Men, we were swimming in a golden age of talent and characterisation that has been unsurpassed since then. Don't believe me? Whether it was the Power Rangers interacting with the Justice League or Batman meeting the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the Distinguished Competition loves a good ol’ crossover. Which is exactly what they’re going to be doing again, when they meet their Merry Melody counterparts for a second round of lunacy.

Despite the occasionally dodgy CGI scene, Henry Cavill’s moustache being banished to the Phantom Zone and the Flash running like a tranquilised Ace Venture, there’s a lot to like about Justice League. It’s not a perfect film and it’ll probably fall victim to hyper-criticism in this opionated day and age, but as a standalone flick that builds on what came before it? It’s definitely a step in the right direction. It’s even more enjoyable in the end credits sequence however, much to the chagrin of the cinema staff who want your butts out of the seats so that they can clean up.

Here’s the lowdown on this crazy tale: Lex Luthor is in charge of Gotham City, thanks to a project that saw the City renamed to “The Garden”. Everything is hunky dory and keeping secrets is frowned upon…by an ever-present security team led by Batman. Someone should fight back against his regime. A job that the Gotham City Garage is ready to accept.
