Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was released last month, and has unsurprisingly gone on to sell a boatload of copies. According to NPD video game guy Mat Piscatella, Modern Warfare was the best-selling game in the Us for October, and the year in general. It’s the 12th year in a row that Call of Duty has been the top-selling game in the month of its release, and that’s not likely to change. As a result, Call of Duty is the best selling franchise in the US overall since tracking began.

We’re just about a third of the way through the year, and it’s been a year that’s already given us some heavy hitting games. It’s that third numbered sequel that’s the best-selling game of the year so far, at least in the US, according to NPD.

For the first time since 2013, Call of Duty wasn’t the best-selling game of the year

Every year there’s a new Call of Duty game, and just about every year it’s the best-selling game in the US within those 12 months. This has been very nearly constant through the last two generations of consoles. Last year, however, was the first year since 2013 that Activision’s juggernaut brand didn’t come out on top.

The best-selling exclusive games since software tracking began are all…Nintendo games

While the Switch seems to be turning things around, people have largely bought Nintendo consoles purely for their exclusives. And that’s something that’s evident from just how many of the top 10 best-selling exclusives of all time (or at least, of all the time that the US NPD has been tracking physical game sales) are on Nintendo’s consoles.

Can you believe it’s already more half way through the year? It feels like we’re just getting out of a very long January, but it’s already July, and soon enough we’ll begin winding the year down. In that vein, the US game-tracking service NPD has done a bit of prognostication, coming up with a bunch of predictions for the last quarter of the year, along with similar professional guesstimations for the year in general.

The US games retail-tracking company the NPD has released its figures for last month, showing that Sony’s PlayStation 4 remains the best-selling console in the US. As is usual, their analysis includes hardware, physical copies of games sold at retail, and some (but not all!) games sold digitally.
