If you’ve got a kid or you’re a child at heart, then it may be nice to have a Power Rangers collection but it’s undoubtedly awesome to tap into the fandom of the Morphin Grid with this fun new take on a classic tool in the fight against evil.

There’s a story behind every action figure or doll you’ve ever owned, a rise and fall of empires and visionaries that created a secret history behind the scenes of pop culture’s greatest icons. The Toys That Made Us is a celebration of epic collections and the riskiest gambles ever taken, with season 3 of the documentary series dialling up the nostalgia to find the humanity that created massive toy empires. That it can do that with a laser-sharp wit and a burning passion, is a testament to the power of toys.

Right now, the latest Power Rangers series is something more…beastly. Or Beast Morphers to be exact! It’s the premise you’re used: A team of warriors, fighting back against the forces of darkness and somehow managing to not level an entire city when they step into their massive mechanised Zords. Like any Power Ranger show, there’s naturally a ton of merchandise out there, such as these two figures I recently got my hands on: The Cybervillain Blaze and the Blue Ranger.

In all of fiction, there is nothing better than the idea of mechanised steel. It’s an enduring concept, one that continues to find ground today and seeing as I’m in charge, I feel like celebrating my love for pop culture’s greatest triumph. Also it’s my list, and if you feel like being pedantic and telling me that entry X isn’t “technically a giant robot”, then you can kiss my Striker Eureka.

Unless I’m mistaken, we’ve never seen Rangers suit up and knock the stuffing out of Rita’s goons and each other on home consoles. Coming in April, Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid aims to address that deficit in spandex-clad pugilism.

The world may be burning, society is in chaos and technology threatens to strip us of our humanity, but it’s comforting to know that in the end times, comic books are better than ever. This year wasn’t just a fantastic year for the medium, it was the very best that fans had ever seen. Writing felt sharper than a hotly forged sword, the art on display could put the entire gallery of the Louvre to shame and the resulting combination was an explosion of quality.

It turns out our fears that Paramount would kill off the best thing to happen to the Powers Rangers brand in years were unfounded, as the company has announced that they want to develop a sequel to the 2017 film.
