Kind of looks like a boombox but I dig it. For the last couple of month’s the next-gen Xbox has been operating under the codename of Project Scarlett, a name that was bound to change as Microsoft finalised plans on the overall look, philosophy and internal design of a device that’ll pave the way for a new console cycle. That prototype era is officially over, as Microsoft officially unveiled Xbox Series X at The Game Awards last night.

We don’t know very much about the next generation of Xbox machines. We know that Microsoft is taking a double-pronged approach with its Project Scarlett family of Xbox devices. Anaconda will be the more powerful of the two, a beastly machine that’ll make the Xbox One X seem silly by comparison, and Lockheart, a possibly discless, less powerful machine with more palatable pricing.

The catch though, is that such hardware comes with a hefty price tag attached to it. Project Scarlett will most likely cost the better part of several salaries to own, something which could leave Microsoft at a disadvantage after it managed to build up an ecosystem of consoles which allowed for more cash-strapped gamers to join in on the fun. Lockheart may be the solution to that dilemma.

Next year’s going to be an especially big year for the Xbox brand as it tries to undo the damage that the Xbox One’s miserable reveal did. With its focus on TV (TV! TV TV!) and Kinect, along with a dearth of great first party games, the Xbox One had a rough start.

If ever there was a story of a proper turnaround from joke to industry benchmark, that’s a tale which belongs solely to Microsoft and its Xbox division. Launching in 2014 to a chorus of meh, the Xbox One is now an entirely different ecosystem of games and services compared to the Xbone that Don Mattrick unveiled five years ago (Remember …

The goal is simple for Xbox: Make a console, make it brilliant and give it UNLIMITED POWER. Or at least enough raw power and grunt to put it far ahead of the competition on a hardware level.

Wherever there’s a new console to be launched, you can bet your toastiest of buns that Ubisoft will be there to spread their specific brand across any hardware that’s fresh out of the box. Next year sees two new consoles arrive to herald in the next generation of gaming: Sony’s PlayStation 5 and Microsoft’s next Xbox which is currently operating under the codename of Project Scarlett.

So what’s on the horizon for Microsoft with the Xbox Scarlett? Could we see multiple systems come 2020, paving the way for a broader ecosystem of consoles? According to Xboss Phil Spencer, Xbox Scarlett will be the only console from the Big M out in 2020, as every effort is being made currently to create a true flagship device.
