Weekend box office report 21 - 23 June 2019: Toy Story 4 posts one of the biggest animated openings of all time, but still manages to fall short. At least it did better than soft opening of the new Child's Play or the complete bomb of Luc Besson's Anna.

Weekend box office report 14 - 16 June 2019: Another terrible weekend for newcomers as Men in Black International and Shaft underperform, however the biggest loser is X-Men: Dark Phoenix which set the wrong type of record in its second week.

Shaft is the upcoming sequel to 2000’s Shaft. It sees John Shaft Jr. (Jessie T. Usher) joining forces with his legendary father, John Shaft II (Samuel L. Jackson), and grandfather, the original John Shaft himself (Richard Roundtree), to uncover the truth behind the death of his best friend.

We get not just one, but three generations of Shaft in this new sequel for the long dormant franchise.

After making huge waves with Ex Machina, it looks like Alex Garland's next sci-fi feature, Annihilation, will be grabbing headlines as well. However, this time it will be because of the behind-the-scenes wrangling that has resulted in a potentially game-changing distribution deal.
