As is the custom, EVO caters to a selection of game that each have their own prize pool of cold hard cash up for grabs, resulting in some games being more popular than the other. That’s not a definite rule though, as other games emerge as fan favourites thanks to their inherent charm and an ability to bring something different to the table when players enter the event.

The video game industry may have plenty of Overwatch tournaments, DOTA championships and at least a half dozen CS: GO events to tune into every year, but there is always will be only one fighting game championship that draws in thumbs and eyeballs from all over the world: EVO. Taking place from the original Sin City once again, the Las Vegas event is gearing up for its biggest year yet as old rivals and new challengers hit the scene.

Much like in previous years, EVO 2018 will have several games from the genre on the floor. Champions from Tekken, Street Fighter and Super Smash Bros. will all compete for glory next month, but here’s the shocker: Street Fighter V isn’t the game that’s drawing the most entrants this year. In a stunning reversal, it’s Arc System Works and Bandai Namco that have the most popular game around this year, in the form of Dragon Ball FighterZ.

Capcom's finally dished out details on the upcoming Arcade Edition of Street Fighter V. The Capcom Unity Blog has now detailed the impending Arcade mode a little more. For starters, they’ve confirmed that the arcade mode will received branching paths, with six different journeys for the characters to go through, based on Street Fighter 1-5, and Street Fighter Alpha.

Street Fighter V is a very good fighting game, but it’s one that launched in a miserable, anaemic state. Lacking much of the sort of content you’d expect in a fighting game, Street Fighter V hasn’t quite been the commercial success that Capcom had hoped. Could an arcade mode and a rerelease change that?

A new gaming series is coming to Disney XD (Channel 304 on DSTV) which includes Street Fighter V and Speedrunning.
