Oh hey, Google Stadia is out, and by all accounts, largely works as intended. There are a bunch of caveats though, and the consensus amongst those who’ve had time with the streaming service is that it’s good, but not quite ready for prime time. It’s also erratic, and there’s an image quality problem – so, unsurprisingly, most feel that it’s better to play on consoles or PCs.

I think we all have to accept that sooner or later, Game Streaming will be the future of how we play videogames. While the next generation of consoles will still use physical media and game installs, Google’s Stadia and Microsoft’s streaming technology xCloud show that we’re approaching a reality where everything we play is streamed from a server somewhere.

Whether we like it or not, game streaming is coming. Google is busy beta testing its own Project stream, letting players beam games to a browser in real-time over the internet. By all reports, it works incredibly well, provided there’s proximity to the servers the game is streaming from. Amazon might be launching its own service.

Remember at the start of the generation when Microsoft banged on and on about the cloud and how it was going to change video games as we knew them? We’ve seen very little of that materialise, but it could just be that Microsoft was being a little too forward thinking. In 2013, technology wasn’t sufficiently advanced to enable that sort of cloud-powered wizardry. In 2018, I’m still not sure it is – but that doesn’t mean that other companies aren’t doubling down on the cloud.
