Starlink: Battle for Atlas is actually a very good game, and the closest thing you’ll get to playing a new star Fox at the moment. In fact, the Switch version of the game even comes with said Fox and his ship. It’s one of those toys-to-life games where players can add, remove, or change things on their toy ships on the fly and have those weapons change within the game. It’s a neat idea, but one that probably came a little too late, as all of the other toys-to-life had already bombed.

Over the years, video games have given birth to plenty of these moments outside of the confines of a digital download or a physical disc. Here’s a bunch of them…if you dare to read them.

The Toys to Life genre is effectively dead. While Nintendo is still selling Amiibo by the truckload, they’re more popular for their collectability than for anything they do in games. The franchise that popularised it all, Skylanders, is on indefinite hiatus. Both Disney Infinity and LEGO Dimensions were cancelled – so Ubisoft’s late entry into the segment is curious. That game is Starlink: Battle for Atlas, a new release that has players mounting spaceships on their controllers, bringing the changes they make to those ships to life in the game.

After Disney Infinity and LEGO Dimensions exited the Toys to Life sector, it looked as though Skylanders was finally left alone to finish what it started. Now, there's just Ubisoft's Starlink: Battle for Atlas. Is it enough to revive the market?

Starlink's toys to life aspect overshadow an incredibly deep and thoughtful game, which will hopefully start making itself more widely known soon.

Skylanders will get another installment this year, but I'm more intrigued by the idea of a kid's TV series for the franchise.
