If you were looking for games that gave you glorious gung-ho action and plenty of weapons with which to deal out some old-fashioned justice, then 2018 was a great year for the shooter genre. From experiences that saw players take on well armed cults of personality to the far reaches of space, here’s a look at the best that the year had to offer for any action junkie who was looking for quality, fun and mayhem.

Today was supposed to be the first day of Battlefield V's Tides of War live-service, but an unexpected issue has caused a delay in rolling out the major update.

Battlefield V has seen many changes in DICE's shooter franchise, including some much-improved community feedback and interaction, both of which is being used to address the game's divisive TTK issue.

Battlefield V is barely a week old, but DICE is already looking to address some of the issues that have been raised as well as releasing the first batch of their planned Tides of War content in early December.

Returning to where it all began more than a decade and a half ago, Battlefield V throws players back into the frontlines of World War II. Thanks to clever new gameplay additions though, this is a view of the Second World War not seen before.

Battlefield V has more release dates than a game should have. It was first available to those who subscribed to EA’s Origin Access Premier. Today, it becomes available to those who pre-ordered the shooter’s deluxe edition. Next week, it’ll become available to the general public, the unwashed, plebeian masses unwilling to pay extra for their games. Expect more games to do this.

Battlefield V is out today for those who purchased the fancy Deluxe Edition or bought the game through EA’s Early Access subscription systems. Those who’ve played it say it actually rather good. Our own Battlefield fan Kervyn is working his way through the game and its Grand Operations, and we’ll have a review as soon as we can. For those playing today, the game’s received its great big day one patch.

Because this is 2018, Battlefield V has three different release dates. The game is officially being released to retail on November 20, but those who pre-order the deluxe edition get to play from November 15. Those who subscribe to EA’s Origin Access Premier, however, could start playing the game from last night. Most who’ve given it a fair shake so far are impressed, but that doesn’t mean that the game is without issue.
