If you were looking for games that gave you glorious gung-ho action and plenty of weapons with which to deal out some old-fashioned justice, then 2018 was a great year for the shooter genre. From experiences that saw players take on well armed cults of personality to the far reaches of space, here’s a look at the best that the year had to offer for any action junkie who was looking for quality, fun and mayhem.

We saw the glory of a war god reborn, we felt the joy of navigating through New York City while spinning webs and we faced stories of a personal nature on a scale that may have been more indie in design but was truly epic in scope. How do you even begin to sum up 2018? How do you condense a year’s worth of gaming into any single rewards category? Well the Game Awards 2018 certainly did just that, with results that probably weren’t surprising.

Destiny’s best Exotic may not be the most powerful gun around when compared to the ludicrous firepower of Riskrunner or the Gambit-breaking weapon of choice for Invaders known as Sleeper Simulant. But it certainly is a gun with the most interesting history out of all the storied weapons in Destiny 2. A story that is making a return, as The Last Word is finally coming home.

Lost Forges will serve as new endgame content that pushes Guardians towards the new power threshold of 650, while also giving you more control over who you play with when Destiny 2's new Black Armory content arrives next week.

With the Season of the Forge kicking off next week, Destiny 2 is going to have a new trio of pinnacle weapons to grind for. Split across Crucible, Vanguard and Gambit activities, weapons like Redrix’s Claymore and Luna’s Howl are going to have a few rivals in the field.

Alright alright alright let’s see what we’ve got! IDIOT TEAMMATES ON THE FIELD BETTER BRING A SWORD! Destiny 2’s Gambit mode is easily the greatest highlight of the post-Forsaken era. It’s fast-paced, high on action and usually results in some tight races to the finish when matches go the full distance. As fun as it is, Gambit could do with a few fixes and Destiny developer Bungie is looking to fine-tune the experience even further.

You’ve probably reclaimed most of your Exotic weapons that were lost when Dominus Ghaul attacked, Riven’s curse has been broken multiple times and you’ve taken more Sleeper Simulant shots to the face in Gambit than you’d care to admit. MY MOTES! So what’s next? The Season of the Forge, as Destiny 2 cycles in new content and adventures with its Black Armory update for Guardians who purchased the Annual Pass.
