I’m feeling pretty confident in declaring that Injustice 2 is hands down the best fighting game of the year. It’s also the game that keeps on giving (for a price), adding new fighters regularly to its roster. The next downloadable brawler? None other than super-scientist Ray Palmer, better known in the superhero community as the Atom.

You can’t spell Mortal Kombat without Raiden and a brain concussion, and it looks like the same might be true for Injustice 2 as EarthRealm’s protective deity is headed to this year’s best fighting game. Here’s a quick look at Raiden in action, as well as his alternate skin which swaps the zap, crackle and pop defender of the realm for Black Lightning. Sadly, there’s no Christopher Lambert skin. Kind of disappointing not to have that option.

I f*cking hate Aquaman in Injustice 2. If DC Comics and NetherRealm wanted to distance themselves as far as possible from the stereotypical image of a founding Justice League member whose moist schtick has been mercilessly mocked for decades, then job well done. Because the Injustice 2 Aquaman may be the biggest dick in the seven seas. Fortunately, Black Manta is here to cut him down to size.

The first batch of fighters have been amazing game-changers in Injustice 2. Red Hood, Starfire and Sub Zero have all been worthy challengers on the roster. A roster that’s about to get a little bit more crowded as Black Manta, Raiden and Hellboy join the fight. Here’s the announce trailer for them.

In Injustice 2, there are at least two nods to Elm Street. One is in the Scarecrow’s gear, an obvious reference to the Fredora worn by the Springwood Slasher. The other? It's an Easter egg that only Fred-Heads wouldpick up on.

The heroes of Injustice 2 will be joined soon by the latest addition to the roster, a strange visitor from another planet who happens to be powered by Earth’s yellow sun. It’s not Krypto the superdog (DAMMIT!) but rather the Teen Titan known as Starfire. Or Coriander Koriand’r to her friends.

Rugby? The soccers? Please, there was only one sport worth watching this weekend, as the must practised of thumbs collided on the grandest stage of fighting games: EVO 2017.
