I’m pretty gosh darned excited for Microsoft and Rare’s impending Sea of Thieves. It’s a seafaring pirate game that I had no interest in whatsoever, until I played the beta and found myself having hours of goofy fun with a crew of likeminded (and equally incapable) scurvy seadogs.

Developer Rare’s upcoming Sea of Thieves might just have a neat twist on the endgame idea, as their massive multiplayer search for dat pirate booty incorporates a system of you establishing yourself as a legend on the seven seas through your actions, not your gear.

Sea of Thieves is coming in March, and it’s a riotously good time for wannabe buccaneers. Rare’s sea-faring game puts you (and a group of friends) at the helm of a pirate ship, off to do quests and live a pirate’s life on the open seas. It’s an inordinate amount of fun. In a year where Xbox needs to prove that it has not only the right exclusives to promote its console family, but also the guts to try something more unique, Sea of Thieves feels like that beautifully idiotic dream realised.

With 2017 done and dusted, it’s time to look forward to what 2018 has to offer. Will there be more loot boxes, controversies that explode in our faces and at least one instance of a game being broken on launch. Probably! But it’ll also be a year filled with all manner of new games, titles which can scratch specific itches and prove that the video game industry is the single greatest entertainment medium alive today. Rare showed off their new IP last year, a booty-tastic foray into dangerous waters that has you the player engaging in some high sea larceny as one of the infamous swashbucklers who roamed that era. Rare was back at E3 with another look at Sea of Thieves and I liked what I had to see: More polish, better visuals and a wide world to explore.

“I know!” said D, as he giggled with glee. “I’ll write my own list of speculation, why tis the eve of E3!”. And thus it was written while he listened to podcasts of comedians from Great Britain, as he got to work on the gist of his list.
