When the first trailer for X-Men: Dark Phoenix dropped two weeks back, I’m sure I wasn’t the only person who immediately felt like we were just looking at X3: The Last Stand 2.0. However, writer/director Simon Kinberg, who penned the earlier film, wanted to stress that this was not the case and that Dark Phoenix has even found some unexpected cosmic inspiration.

Fox revealed the news this Friday past, just two days after that trailer dropped, which is a little awkward, to say the least.

After a rather lengthy and detailed recent rumour claimed that Fox was considering scrapping X-Men: Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants thanks to production troubles, new evidence has come out refuting that. However, that doesn't mean there still aren't issues on Fox's upcoming mutant superhero movies.

Both X-Men: Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants have been hit with several delays, pushing them all the way back to next year. Now a new report has emerged from a Fox insider who claims that both films are in such a state of disarray that they may just be scrapped entirely to clear the slate for Disney's inevitable takeover of the franchise.

It seems Fox is learning some lessons from previous disappointing X-Men movie and wanting to keep it a little more grounded this time round. And introduce Aliens. Wait, what?
