I hear horror stories from other parents about their children, who sit bleary-eyed, glued to a screen all evening. German shopping chain Aldi’s UK stores want to do something about that – but they’ve gone about it in the most misguided way imaginable.

Last night, THQ Nordic – the resurrected company that’s been buying properties and studios on its quest for European game domination – held an Ask me Anything (AMA). Farming Simulator is one of those games that everybody likes to poke fun at, but it’s one of the largest gaming brands on the planet, and sells by the truckload in some regions, notably places like Germany, Switzerland, and here in South Africa where it regularly makes the top-selling games list. It’s a big game with a larger audience than you might imagine. And that audience is ripe for the picking, because Farming Simulator is now an esport.

The ESWC is arguably one of the largest and most prestigious esports tournaments on the planet. It’s an event that South Africa has participated in before, with South African qualifiers for ESWC CS:GO through tournament organiser Orena. ESWC has now announced an African tournament pitting the best teams in Africa against each other after a round of qualifiers. Here’s the thing though. South Africa has been excluded.

Earlier this year, Valve halted player trades for Dutch CS: Go and DOTA players and disabled CS:GO lootboxes completely. Now, loot boxes are back for DOTA players in The Netherlands, but they now show their contents before purchase.
