I love deep and heartfelt movies, with tender, soul searching plots and endearing characters as much as the next film fan, but every now and again, I just like to watch a man swing a really big axe at another man’s face. And for times like that, you have movies like Hammer of the Gods.
Now don’t get me wrong, this doesn’t appear to be brainless at all, and in fact you have some of the best actors of some of the best series on TV right (Elliot Cowan – Lorenzo Medici in Da Vinci’s Demons, Clive Standen – Rollo in Vikings) now leading the cast, but there’s just something so very “id” about vikings trying to turn each other’s insides into outsides.
Set in Viking Britain in 871 AD, Hammer of the Gods is a visceral, intense tale set in a world whose only language is violence. A young Viking warrior, Steinar (Charlie Bewley), is sent by his father the king on a quest to find his estranged brother, who was banished from the kingdom many years before. Steinar’s epic journey across terrifyingly hostile territory allows him to emerge as the man his father wants him to be.
Hammer of the Gods will be getting an online VOD release on 30 May, 2013 before raiding cinemas on July 5, 2013.
